Truth is, I love both types of books. I love reading about friends who realize they're interested in that uniquely most awkward of ways. But also it's great to have books that focus on exploring the friendship itself, without shoehorning an unnecessary romance.

Bonus points if I genuinely can't tell which is which when I start reading the book. A lot of these, especially genre romances, make it way too heavy handed. While I love the subtlety in this type of relationship, something that keeps the other characters guessing.

The Singing Hills series by Nghi Vo would fit the bill, but it’s more it’s more than two books. I think it’s currently six novellas.
