My favorite books are Instance of the Fingerpost by Iain Pears, Name of the Rose, I Claudius. Looking for books particularly in that vein as I am a history major, so I want very detailed historical fiction. I've read many of the normally suggested works like Shogun. Thank you!

Matrix by Lauren Groff is a deeply researched imagined biography of Marie de France, whose poetry survived, but very little information about her life did.
The Marriage Portrait is based on a real portrait and short lived marriage of a daughter of the Medici family and a Duke of Ferrara
[In a Dark Wood Wandering](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/123091.In_a_Dark_Wood_Wandering) is a good one, set in late medieval France.
