I read The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu recently and was struck by how deeply it moved me, all within so few pages. I’d like to discover more short stories that really pack a punch and resonate deeply.
What are your favourite short stories – the ones that stuck with you long after reading?

*Harrison Bergeron* by Kurt Vonnegut lives rent-free in my head. I’ve loved it since before I even recognized it as Vonnegut’s work. We read it for the first time in middle school, and once again in high school, and neither time did I internalize nor remember the author.
This year, I read *The Sirens of Titan* for the first time, and it describes people wearing lead shot bags and body weights as “handicaps in life” and thought to myself, “huh, that sounds like Harrison Bergeron!”
*Lightbulb moment, followed by immediate furious googling*
Lo and behold, my favorite short story ever was in fact written by the man who has rapidly earned the title of my favorite author as I’m currently tearing my way through his novels this year. I’ve read 10/14 of them so far, with *Galapagos* coming up next.
The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula LeGuin.
Blood child by Octavia E Butler.
