As with almost all movie adaptations, the movie cuts some corners, removes some details, and changes a few story lines. But they are well done adaptions if you want to just learn the story. If you want to learn about the characters and the depth of the world, the books are better.

Always the book first. Once you’ve seen the movie you’ll never imagine the characters or scenery. Seeing the movie after won’t be any better or worse after reading though. The books are awesome, audible versions also good. The movies are a rare species of pretty good versions too. Enjoy

The books first, they aren’t the easiest read. I hope you like Elven sheet music.

Books first. The movies did a really, really good job, probably one of the best adaptation to date IMHO, but they indeed change details and storylines. Start with the Hobbit if you can!
