A (preferably) fun book for a married couple to read together

My wife and I have been together forever and media consumption (movies, TV, theater) has always been something we've bonded with. But we've never read a book together. She's more of an Anne Rice, Hunger Games, and Harry Potter reader. I'm more of a Victorian sci-fi,(Verne, Wells) nonfiction (cultural criticism).

Neither one of us want to read any romance but we'd appreciate any suggestions for good books/novellas a middle aged couple might bond over.
