I loved Longitude but feel like I haven't ever read another book like it, explaining the background mechanisms and science that enabled other huge (and potentially more famous) leaps in human understanding.
*Connections* by James Burke. I never read his book, but I thoroughly enjoyed his show.
*The Making of the Atomic Bomb* by Richard Rhodes discusses similar breakthroughs in physics and technology that allowed for the development of the atomic bomb. That book I did read.
