I'm feeling really depressed right now and the only thing I can manage to read is Jane Austen, re-reading her books are a comfort to me. Only problem is that there aren't many and I'm looking for more to fill the gap. Similar ish books along the lines of what I'm after besides generic Jane Austen like – Dickens is ok (Nicholas Nickelby and David Copperfield) as long as you skip the most Dickensian bits. All the Brontes I've read and not really light enough although I don't have the best memory of Vilette or Agnes Grey. George Eliot – Middlemarch quite ok, plus Felix Holt I seem to recall wasn't too much of a downer. For later eras, Cold Comfort Farm is a good one, maybe even I Capture the Castle although perhaps a bit young now. A Room With a View is another good one.
But mainly I wish there were more low stakes Austen-ish books of people going to other people's houses, a few funny bits, everything turns out well in the end.

Anne of Green Gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery
Not a classic because it’s too recent, but if you’re open to very long books, maybe try [The Hands of the Emperor](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/af2bba9c-8f41-4a3e-b87a-8532a44ccb67) by Victoria Goddard (my favorite book). It’s a beautifully written slice of life book about the personal secretary to the emperor of the world, with a heavy focus on platonic relationships. It’s very lighthearted and delightful.
Otherwise, maybe the [Anne of Green Gables](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/bf94837a-486b-4147-a365-6b076b42139e) books by L.M. Montgomery?
