I’m not trying to ride this book, I know it was super popular a few years ago so I’m a bit late, but I actually really liked it. I find myself being critical of books often and kind of forgot that people hated it until she started wearing the tiara everyday and I was like “ohhhh”. So I feel like I was at an advantage because I went in with the expectation that it’d be piss poor writing. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I’m not sure of the authors intentions but Autumn is a teenage girl, she’s supposed to be cringy, sad, mad, full of herself and angsty. When I read it as if she’s a growing girl, I kind of hated her less and didn’t think she was insufferable. Obviously it’s from her POV so we have no clue if kids were secretly making fun of her behind her back (like high schoolers do), and I do have to say her names for everything screams theater kid in high school that’s pretentious. The ending also was not unexpected. Did everyone not read the first 5 pages where it was explicitly said it’d end that way? When I turned the page I was like “oh damn..” We knew what was gonna happen and the building of their relationship did make it that much more special. I don’t like the open-endedness at the end but maybe it wasn’t meant to be a long book. I think people are very critical without reading in between the lines, but then again, I’ve been telling myself I need to enjoy some books overanalyze them based solely on writing. Not every book is meant to have this deep deep theme or understanding behind it, and it’s understandable for teenage girls to relate to Autumn.
A bit unrelated: I read Bloom yesterday and disliked that one because the writing was so distracting but I was able to fall in and blend into this book, which says a lot
