A friend of mine has recently shown interest in the literature I'm reading and wants to read a book himself. I told him I'd find something for him. He hasn't done any reading for fun in a while though and I'm finding it tricky to come up with something that would not alienate him.

    His requirements are:

Book must be in English. This is important because English is not his first language and I'm trying to find something that isn't slathered in jargon.

Non-fiction. Preferably historical but I'll take other suggestions as well provided the premise is interesting.

Moderate length. Given that he has to shake some rust, I'd prefer that the book didn't go on for too long. Something like 300-400 pages or thereabouts should do.

Subject matter isn't really all too important. My friend isn't squeamish. That said I'd like to avoid books that deal exclusively with a heavy subject matter. It's okay if it's a book about, say, the Vietnam war but I wouldn't like if it was a book focused solely on the war crimes done in Vietnam, if that makes any sense.

I'd appreciate it a lot if you guys could help me with this.
