hi I'm looking for a novel about young or not-so-young people in Japan, especially people who are angsty, experiencing malaise and ennui, bored and directionless. Alternatively, people who are having slightly subversive adventures in Japan. Basically either a Japanese Kerouac or a Japanese English, August
thanks!
edit: no Murakami please.

It’s over 100 years old, but take a look at ‘The Miner’ by Sōseki.
*There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job* by Kikuko Tsumura. It’s about a woman who burned out at her career and takes a series of strange temp jobs after she runs out of unemployment. Not sure if they would be considered subversive, but there’s a touch of magical realism to it.
Convenience Store Woman, by Sayaka Murata. It’s a quick read.
