I had trouble with the title. I'm looking for a book that's historically kind of accurate, about a peasant boy or a slave who rises up the ranks in society through war—not one that comes at knight, but something close enough. Then he returns home.
It can have some fantasy elements, but I'm mostly looking for a story about a boy who leaves a small village as a nobody and comes back as somebody.

The storm light archive by Brandon sanderson have a good arch following this but it’s not exactly medieval fiction. Definitely more fantasy coded with magic and strange creatures, but they fight with spears and swords and have kings and slaves so seems medieval enough to me to recommend
