Apparently this belongs here. Shame I can't copy over a day's constructive responses.

    Rant Post.

I am really struggling at the moment to find really new reading material. I have a few decades of words behind me, so I have read a lot of classics across several genres. I have probably thousands of books on my shelves.

I go into the bookshop, read blurbs and so many books just seem very deriviative or 'the new Welsh/Tolkein/Austen/Tolstoy', but nothing seems fresh and imaginative. Contemporary fiction seems like more middle-calss angst with charcters I can't actually care about.

I end up buying books from long-running series that are frankly a bit worked out or grabbing scifi/fantasy books that seem to disappoint because they are standard tropes, rearranged.

Where do I go for something with some new ideas?
