I’ve never read Cormac McCarthy, however I just finished playing the game The Last of Us Part I and I want to read a book with a similar story. I’ve heard The Road is very bleak, but that’s what I’m looking for-something emotionally raw like The Last of Us.

I had to read The Road in high school and was reading it during lunch – I came across a section where I couldn’t stop crying uncontrollably and literally had to go home for the rest of the day.
For me, at least, it was unbearably emotionally raw and bleak.
It’s a worthwhile book, but prepare to be depressed.
I really liked The Road. Definitely worth reading, and probably the best McCarthy book to start with. I’m not a huge fan of McCarthy, but The Road is solid.
I read it in a day. So, yes it is worth it.
Only book I ever cried over.
I first read him when All The Pretty Horses came out, then went back and read Blood Meridian, then read The Road when it came out. I think The Road is my least favorite of the three but maybe the most approachable? There are some hardcore McCarthy fans here who may weigh in, but given your interests it sounds like you might really like it.
Beautiful, grim, staggering, bleak poetry.

It’s tremendously good.
I’m a parent, and I couldn’t get through it. Gave me nightmares about not being able to protect my family.
I would not recommend it unless you want to cry and be sad forever
Absolutely
I would read it once, but never again. It is well-written and a very worthwhile read, but the scars will last a while.
