The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I loved it from the first page and by about page six I knew it would become one of my all-time favorites.

Airborn. The first line has stuck with me for years. Middle grade mystery, but doesn’t read like a kids book at all. Plus, sky pirates.

Beartown by Fredrik Backman! This is the first chapter:
Late one evening towards the end of March, a teenager picked up a double-barrelled shotgun, walked into the forest, put the gun to someone else’s forehead, and pulled the trigger.
This is the story of how we got there.

Tiffany Jackson’s Monday’s Not Coming and Allegedly.

Sevenes by Neil Stephenson
The opening line is “the moon blew up today without warning and for no apparent reason”
Hooked me right from the start

You hear it again and again because it’s true, East of Eden. Ignored it for years, picked it up to pack for a flight, flight delay + 7hr flight, got to the hotel late and finished it the next day.
11/22/63 from King as well. Unputdownable.

The Terror by Dan Simmons. The year it came out I stayed up the whole night, most of another, cancelled all plans read the whole thing in one stint. I have never done that before or since.
