Goshawk Squadron by Derek Robinson is THE perfect example of what I am after. It doesn't have to be war but I am not after a book about 'relationships', whether it's romance or unhappy couples type thing.
Does need to have a plot. It's not all about gore either. In fact gore would put me off a bit, I want dark but not some horror slasher book. Glokta in Abercrombies First Law is another good example of the humour I want.
I find the British do this kind of humour better but it doesn't have to be a UK author.
I've read Wodehouse, it's a bit too haha, although I did like them.
No slapstick humour, no comedy stuff like Pratchett (I've read them, it's not the humour I want)
To Say Nothing Of The Dog, Connie Willis was ok, a bit too annoying though with the way her characters are always dysfunctional and disorganised. No, I don't want the book it's copied off.
I tried Waugh, the men At Arms and it was just…boring.
I've read How To Murder Your Employer as well. Not bad, a bit not dark enough.
