    Hi everyone!

I’m on the hunt for picture books that offer rich metaphor and layered allegory. I’m looking for stories that, while presented in a picture book format, explore deep or abstract ideas. Think The Arrival, The Red Tree, or Tales from Outer Suburbia by Shaun Tan. These kinds of books speak to both children and adults through symbolic imagery, surreal narratives, and emotional depth.

I’m particularly interested in books that explore themes like grief, identity, migration, mental health, or the environment through visual and metaphorical storytelling. Australian titles or authors are a bonus, but I’m open to international recommendations too. I’m also interested in works that could inspire theatrical adaptation or physical theatre with students. Anthology-style collections with interconnected themes are also welcome.

I’d love to hear your recommendations. Whether they’ve worked well in your classroom, performance projects, or just stuck with you personally, please share.

    Thanks in advance!
