My niece and my baby cousin are 10 and 11 respectively. Both have loved to read (like me) from a very small age and are realistically at adult reading levels.
However, their parents (and I) are struggling to find books with appropriate content that aren’t so young.

For example, the first Anne of Green Gables book and even the second are fine, but my niece wants to read the rest which may be too adult.
My little cousin wants to read the Diary of Anne Frank but I’m not sure how she’ll handle the more adult topics in it.
    No romance!

Any suggestions? Both like fantasy/sci Fi.

My daughter and I enjoyed the series about The Sisters Grimm by Michael Buckley. We read them while she was in high school and early college. The first one details the girls being orphaned and sent to live with their grandmother in a town inhabited by fairy tale characters. They are a little dark at times, deal with scary situations for the girls, and are mesmerizing for the reader. Ultimately, the girls prevail in each book.
