I’ve read This Cursed House and found it very predictable and unsatisfying and I’m currently reading House of Cotton and it’s weird but not scratching the itch. I’m really looking for something akin to the game South of Midnight, with lots of folklore. Maybe even something slightly eldritch? I just want to be unsettled. I really love books like Mexican Gothic, American Rapture, Hungerstone, Sisters of a Lost Nation, and anything by Grady Hendrix. Thanks a lot!

Southern Gods.
You can try the OG southern gothic with some William Faulkner stories. I recommend his short story A Rose for Emily, it’s only 10 pages or so and it’ll let you figure out if you like his style or not.
I also like A House With Good Bones by T Kingfisher for a more modern take of Southern Gothic horror.
