I’m looking for books that provide a foundational understanding of key academic disciplines or sub-disciplines. Not necessarily textbooks, but well-written, accessible books that explain the core ideas, history, and way of thinking within a given field.
Basically, I’m trying to build a broad base of worldly understanding through maybe applying the Pareto principle in which 80% of a topic could be explained or outlined by the recommended book?

Physics: *The Making of the Atomic Bomb* by Richard Rhodes.
OUP does ‘Very Short Introduction ‘ books on dozens of topics. They’re all written by academics and experts and very accessible, really recommend.
