I’m finding that after watching Andor and reading some of the new canon Thrawn novels and less “swashbuckling” of the Jack Ryan novels, I enjoy a good amount of political maneuvering in my fiction along with the action/adventure of the plot.
I read Spin Doctor by Michael Shea and found it a little dry. I’ve enjoyed the background politics of several histories and biographies of the Secret Service, and the political climate of the Lady Astronaut series was a fantastic foundation for the plot.
I like a thriller, like the Orphan X series, so I thought something like a political thriller might be up my alley.
Edit to add: I’ve read and enjoyed Game of Thrones, so the politics don’t have to be real. Duplicity with words and back alley handshakes, love it. The political background of the latter half of the Harry Potter series, good but could have been deeper. Hot take, I love the politics of Phantom Menace.
