I just finished Destiny of the Republic by Candice Millard and that book was amazing. Would love to find more history books like that but instead about the American west–could be gold rush, cowboys, pioneers, whatever. Just want it to be dramatic and interesting.

check out Two Years Before The Mast! I thought I was going to be reading an interesting book about sailing in the 1800s and found myself reading a very interesting book about the California coast in the early 1800s.
The Indifferent Stars Above — Daniel James Brown. It doesn’t have all the political overlay of Destiny. But it’s about a very interesting episode (Donner party) in the American west. I found the book to be engaging.
Pacific Circuit by Alexis Madrigal is a great history of California (and Oakland in particular)
