Last time I enjoyed a book was 20 years ago in middle school but I have just been getting back into reading again and have been constantly picking up romance, fantasy, sci-fi, and depressing historical fiction… and not really enjoying any of those genres…which are suggested everywhere.
I think I just wanted to be transported to a place and story I can imagine being in and be happy about it and maybe learn some life lessons from it. I don't need any romance in my life. Does anything like this exist?

Four Seasons in Japan by Nick Bradley
The Housekeeper and The Professor by Yoko Ogawa
Both very lovely reads and a breath of fresh air to follow characters going about their lives that are well written! Some excellent insights into life and how to find meaning in even the small things.
My rec would be Donna Leon’s books. They are crime novels but quite humorous and feel-good. They take you into the streets of Venice and you don’t want to leave.
