One of my favourite books is the Wind Up Bird Chronicle (Murakami). The surreal nature of the novel, and its chapter structure was incredible. Unfortunately I am not a fan of most of the author's other work.
I am currently reading The New York Trilogy (Auster), and while I have Roadside Picnic and Hadji Murat on my list, I have an itch to scratch
I'm currently playing Death Stranding 2 (the first game is one of my all-time favourites) and something about the atmosphere is reminiscent of WUBC.
Any ideas for a novel of decent length with a surreal, maybe magical, setting that also has thematic and narrative grounding? I find some of the usual recs are a bit tryhard and don't seem to have any meaning other than being weird for weird's sake.
Themes of isolation, detachment, introspective and dreamlike, nonlinear and surreal: that's what I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance
