I know this is oddly specific! I am currently reading a recently popular book (to avoid spoilers, I'll put the name of the book down at the bottom). In this book, the MC is in a land of infinite rooms, with only one other person, and he starts learning more and more about the outside world as the story progresses.
The book I'm reading has fantasy/magical realism elements which aren't my favorite. But it's making me really want a book set in reality, where the MC is very naive to the way the outside world works, because all (s)he knows is her life in captivity. It doesn't matter to me if they know they are in captivity or not.
***Spoiler***
The book I'm reading now is Piranesi. A lot of people say to go into it completely blind, which is why I'm trying to be careful not to spoil it. I'm not too far into it so my description might change as i get deeper into it!

I Who Have Never Known Men
Room by Emma Donoghue. The narrator is a five year old boy who was born and has lived all his life in the underground cell where his mother is held by the man who kidnapped her as a teenager. Despite that, not quite as bleak as it sounds.
Room is the easy answer
