My BIL is a serious literature snob and he is taking a trip to Paris next month. For his bday I would like to get him a great French book that is serious enough for his taste. I had looked into My Father’s Glory, My Mother’s Castle because it looks like something he would enjoy. Any other suggestions would be wonderful.

Maybe something from Derrida – his philosophy influenced so much of French culture and literature.
Try Marcel Proust
Pagnol is pretty good but isn’t necessarily “serious”, most people discover him during childhood in france
L’Anti-Œdipe Deleuze & Guatarri, if you need something difficult
Patrick Modiano if you want something Parisian.
