ive been a bit bored lately and id like something to read but no matter how many hours I spend at a bookshop/library I can never find anything, usually I look at young adult books because im in highschool but regular books are fine too. Id like something thats not a straight romance/not a cliche romance story and I am also not looking to read a murder mystery/horror book – since Im usually very picky I thought id be able to think of some other requirements but I actually cant lol I guess “not a straight romance” rules out a lot of books, I also dont really want to read any classics i dont have anything agaisnt them just not in the mood atm. smth fantasy might be cool ive always loved that stuff but I also enjoy a good regular fiction book – I just need something orginal and interesting so yeah give me whatever recommendations.

Catfishing on Catnet by Naomi Kritzer is YA, near-future sci-fi (like reality mostly, just add some improbable technology). I don’t know how to describe it without spoiling things, but I think it’s really fun & well-written & full of interesting ideas. There’s a sequel, Chaos on Catnet.
Find Layla by Meg Elison is also YA, contemporary fiction, upsetting in some ways (main character’s parental abuse/neglect), but brilliant.
The Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire is actually not YA, though it is about teenagers. Some of the books are darker than others, but none of this is really horror either. These are more fantasy, and quite short.
The Gallagher Girls series… the first book might seem cheesy but the whole series has a great storyline
The Neil Peel series by Ben Dixon might do it. Very funny books about a boy who always tells the truth. New school, nerdy friend group, bullies, evil-genius older sister, Christmas, summer holiday, sex ed lesson, school disco, bizarre family members. All regular situations told in a hilarious way with plenty of cheeky bits that younger YA readers wouldn’t get. The Heroic Truths of Neil Peel is the first one.
Look at the Shadowfell series by Juliet Marillier.
