Song: Red Sex – Vessel
Hey! I'm a bit of a picky reader and also lowkey am guilty of buying a book based on reviews 😔 I also haven't really read a lot, just getting into it.
I want to read a book that feels unsettling and eerie in a way. like nothing too scary, I am not the biggest fan of too much gore and horror, but i love horror thriller movies; something with interesting lore too.
The only book I have read that COULD go in this direction is Verity by Colleen Hoover. Wasn't too unsettling except the manuscript which i found evil and fucked up (but was also my favorite part to read lol)
So yeah, it can go into ANY direction, i'm really open. Just something interesting please 🥹
Thanks for your suggestions!

oh I LOVE that song. maybe try House of Leaves? super interesting and atmospheric, not gory, but tense and scary and lots of lore (even TOO MUCH lore at times lmao).
I am genuinely flummoxed by Verity being classified as thriller/horror, isnt she a romance author 😭 I’ve never read her stuff so apologies if this isn’t what you wanted at all:
Unsettling, Weird Books That I Liked:
Chlorine – Jade Song (girl thinks she is literally turning into a mermaid because of reasons you’ll find out if you read)
Bunny – Mona Awad (MFA candidate finally starts hanging out with her classmates only to find they’re a bit more odd than she anticipated)
Alls Well – (also) Mona Awad (theater teacher puts on one last play. Mayhem ensues. Or does it?)
Y/N – Esther Yi (a woman develops a parasocial relationship with a Kpop boy band member)
Supper Club – Lara Williams (woman bored with life starts throwing elaborate, semi(?)-disgusting and semi(?)-illegal dinner parties)
Tampa – Alissa Nutting (extremely unsettling book where you follow a female pedophile)
Brat – Gabriel Smith (short n strange)
My Annihilation – Fuminori Nakamura (puzzle box of a book about human nature)
More Typical Horror I Liked:
Most of Stephen King, specifically It (a masterpiece and genuinely terrifying) and Carrie (less terrifying, still really good)
We Used To Live Here – Marcus Kliewer (haunted house/town)
The Watchers – A. M. Shine (Woman gets lost in the woods and the woods are watching)
Knock Knock, Open Wide – Neil Sharpson (folk horror)
More Typical Thrillers I Liked:
Any/all Gillian Flynn
Perfume – Patrick Süskind (maybe not a true thriller but I was thrilled reading it and you genuinely don’t know what’s coming around every turn)
None of This is True – Lisa Jewell (formulaic but I had a fun time)
Lock Every Door – Riley Sager
Local Woman Missing – Mary Kubica
Hope you find something you enjoy!
