I’m about halfway through 1984 (Part Two Chapter VII). I started reading it mainly because it’s probably something of an important read in today’s environment.

I’ve been struggling with getting into the story. I get why it’s “important” but it strikes me as one of those books with a message that didn’t need to be novel length. Like, a 20-page short story with the themes and message would’ve sufficed. I did like the parts about retroactively editing prior information to support/confirm the present.

I’m just after the part where Winston is basically renting a room.

Big Brother, newspeak, censorship, surveillance, nationalism, abductions…

Is there anything else/new in the second half? I really feel like the above themes have been repeated over and over again. I’m not getting much out of the story, prose, or characters, so the only “value” I see in continuing is in the “important” themes/message.

Does the second half basically keep reviewing the themes that have been covered ad nauseam already? Does it have “anything new to say”? I’m fine with continuing if there’s new stuff, but if I’ve basically gotten all I can from it I’d rather move on to something else.

    Thank you.
