This year I have gotten into reading long classics. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy and Middlemarch by George Eliot. The world building, story arcs, political backdrop and societal commentary in both these nevels were extremely engaging and thought provoking. I am looking for books that have a similar reading experience. Thanks a lot!

Middlemarch is my favorite book and I love Anna Karenina.
Two modern books I love that feel very similar areÂ
A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth – the main character has three suitors from very different backgrounds and she is navigating getting married in a rapidly modernizing India in the 50s. The country is newly independent and politically volatile.
The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese is similar to the two you mentioned in that it follows multiple characters over a period of 60 years. It depicts healthy and toxic marriages and it is gorgeously written. It’s set in Malabar in south India, in the St Thomas Christian Community, which is a setting I knew nothing about. I love everything by Verghese.
