What are some good books to learn more about Norse mythology/history and Japanese history?

I'm interested in the history and religion of the sort of Viking era Scandinavia as well as Japanese history but I've only ever known about it on a surface/pop culture level. I'm interested in learning more but I don't want something insanely academic and professional if that makes sense.
