Looking for fantasy with hard earned magic system with no shortcuts.

Hello, I'm looking for a fantasy novel or series where the magic system emphasizes growth through hard work, knowledge, study and mastery over one's self. I want characters to earn their power through effort and experience rather than shortcuts like innate talent, magical artifacts, bloodline, or "chosen one" tropes.

Ideally, if a powerful mage appears in the story, I want it to be immediately clear that they've earned their strength through years of training, wisdom, and overcoming real challenges and not because they were born special or got lucky.
