I am taking a break from novels, having completed The Wind-up Bird Chronicle last month and Crossroads before that. Currently reading The Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories, and I am really enjoying the book. Any other anthology suggestions that you think are a must read?

Genres: Slice of Life would be best, but really anything goes except sci-fi.

Since you’re already enjoying the Penguin anthology, this is a natural next step. It has some overlap but offers different selections and editorial insights, including works by Kawabata, Mishima, and Murakami. Malgudi Days by R.K. Narayan Classic Indian slice-of-life with wit, warmth, and sharp observation. The Adivasi Will Not Dance by Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar –Stories about marginalized tribal communities in India, beautifully written and poignant. The Art of the Story: An International Anthology of Contemporary Short Stories, edited by Daniel Halpern, is my fav, and these are the collection that I own but haven’t read

You can’t go wrong with a collection of shorts from either Washington Irving or Jack London. TBH I’m surprised none of the streamers have commissioned an anthology series of Irving’s work.
