I want to get a better understanding of the contemporary world, and I feel that I can't do it unless I learn more about what happened in the last century. Could you suggest me some books that cover what happened from WW1 to the modern day?

Bill Bryson 1927 is excellent for a glimpse of the 1920s.
Tim Weiner – Legacy of ashes – how the CIA interfered with the world, mostly incompetently, in the twentieth century.
Oliver Stone – The untold history of the United States- warts and all !
For British history – Andrew Marr’s two volume history of modern Britain is quite readable.
