I’m months into a long job hunt, which is demoralizing enough on its own, but now for three weeks I’ve had debilitating vertigo—to the point that I can hardly walk, let alone keep up with my house and kids. And I’m struggling because I can’t really even watch TV or do anything with my hands. Reading on the page or screen is hard, but an audiobook I could do. I’d love a book that is really hopeful. I don’t want something light and fluffy like a romance or comedy, but something meaningful and robust that reminds you of the good and beauty in the world. Fiction or historical non-fiction are what I would probably prefer. What would you recommend?

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig
How about A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith?
Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers! It’s an all-time fave of mine, so lovely and kind. I can’t speak to the audiobook specifically, but I’m sure it’s good too!
The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune helps me when I enter a valley
The Impossible Fortress by Jason Rekulak or Going Zero by Anthony McCarten
Maybe something by Rebecca Solnit (Hope in the Dark, A paradise built in hell, or Orwells Roses)
Might be a bit too real at times – but hopefully hopeful?
Biographies of people I admire can be a not fluffy pick me up as well.
Sorry to hear about what you’re going through. Job hunting is depressing.
I’d recommend something like…
Dear Leader
Empire of the Summer Moon
Dungeon Crawler Carl
A Fire Upon the Deep
