I’m German and a close Indian friend once introduced me to a world of literature I now deeply treasure. She moved back to India and we’ve drifted apart over the years… and I’ve been feeling the quiet ache of that loss more than I expected.

Some of the books she shared with me include:

    • Latitudes of Longing (Shubhangi Swarup)
    • The Lowland (Jhumpa Lahiri)
    • The God of Small Things (Arundhati Roy)

I’m drawn to stories with a layered emotional landscapes, subtle grief and an atmosphere that lingers. If you know of anything, especially by South Asian authors, but really any books that live in that emotional register I’d love to hear your suggestions.

And if any of this resonates and you want to chat: my DMs are open too

    1. This doesn’t exactly fit your ask but *It Lasts Forever and Then It’s Over* by Anne de Marcken is a very weird but ultimately beautiful take on grief. If the idea of zombies doesn’t totally turn you off then I’d suggest giving it a try.
