Hi, I am 22 and want to start a reading habit. I have read books but it has been many years since I read one. I am studying literature and my teachers suggested that every literature student should read books so I want to try but don't know from where to start

    1. First, what kind of books you think you would like?

If you don’t really know, what kind of TV show or movies are your favorites? Based on this answer it will be easier for us to help you out

    2. “Five days at Memorial : life and death in a storm-ravaged hospital” by Sheri Fink.

Anything by Rose George, Judy Melinek, Caitlin Doughty, or Mary Roach. All about subjects you never considered, some about real dead bodies, and all VERY interesting.

Gavin de Becker’s “The gift of fear : survival signals that protect us from violence”

I’m not sure what books you’re into but I would recommend the silent patient by Alex Michaelides, it’s the most captivating book I’ve read in ages, it had nice short chapters and I read it in four days which is coming from someone who is a slow reader, I literally couldn’t put it down

    4. Torchlight Parade by Jeanpaul Ferro

It is an epic odyssey about the young man who winds up being the one to kill Hitler. Just a fantastic journey reminiscent of Ernest Hemingway.

    5. Project Hail Mary. The trick is to be fine with not knowing what’s going on at first

What We Talk About When We Talk About Love and/or Cathedral by Raymond Carver. It’s all short stories, but they are super gripping and get to the point. Every time I picked them up, it was with intention to only read a few at a time but kept saying “okay just one more” and before I knew it, I read the whole of each book.

The Starless Sea – Erin Morgenstern. I can’t recommend this book enough.

If you like very believable Sci-Fi (no reason to know science, since it is explain quite simply and even if you don’t understand it does not take away from enjoyement of the story) read PROJECT HAIL MARY by Andy Weir. Or Martian by the same author.

If you like more fiction than science read the Murderbot diaries. Most books are around 160 pages long (only 5th book is around 350-400). The main character has a great sarcastic sense of humor.

If you like comedy with a hint of romance, go for Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. It is a LGBTQ+ book (in case it matters to you).

Or anything by Joanna Bolouri. The funniest is The List. It has very explicit sex scenes, if that is not your wibe, go for The most wonderful time of the year.

I’m reading Martha Well’s murderbot novella series! Im super hooked. I’m 21 if that is part of your consideration.

    10. What are your interests? Reading for thrills? Reading to hone your craft? Thing is, any book suggestion to keep you hooked is going to be a crap shoot.

Dalton Trumbo – Johnny Got His Gun
Hunter S. Thompson – Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas
      J. Maarten Troost – The Sex Lives of Cannibals
Carlos Fuentes – Death of Artemio Cruz
Edward Abbey – The Brave Cowboy; Desert Solitaire; Hayduke Lives
Henry Miller – Tropic of Cancer; Tropic of Capricorn
William Least-Heat Moon – Blue Highways

Those cover quite a wide swath but none of these were in my lower or upper div literature courses at uni. These are just a few of the books that kept me hooked and represent a wide array.

      Just keep reading.
