no specific genre but I prefer fiction; any age range is fine!

    what I’m looking for:

    • general physical disability, limited mobility, chronic pain, long-term disease

    • doesn’t have to be explicitly about this, just mentioned throughout/smaller part of plot

    • chronic illness that you know will not get better and is a fact of life

    • worrying about parent because of their health

    • expecting their death to happen sooner than normal

    examples:

    • Was just reading Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate to my kid. The main character’s father has MS and it mentions him walking with a cane on bad days; he also had to leave his job and now works part-time.

    • Something about the Beauty & the Beast movie always made me emotional as a kid, and I didn’t realize until later that I must have seen Maurice as older and disabled like my dad, which explained Belle’s concern when he gets lost in the forest.

    • Magic & Matchmaking by Tee Harlow is more lighthearted with its depiction, but the main character is reluctant to work at another place in town, or to follow her dreams and travel outside the town, because she feels the need to help take care of her father.

apparently can’t link anything, but wanted to reference a similar post in this sub from 3 years ago called “books for people who grew up with a chronically ill parent”
