My little brother is turning 15 soon and has always been super interested in history– specifically military history. I would love to get him an in-depth book or two on the subject for his birthday (nothing introductory, he's very intelligent). However, I do feel like he over-glorifies war, so I would like any books I get him to be comprehensive (i.e. inclusive of the inhumanity of military history. nothing traumatizing, just realistic).

Does anybody have any recommendations? Request not specific to any country or region. Thanks so much.

    1. All Quiet On The Western Front. Gallipoli. Gates Of Fire. King Rat James Clavell. A prisoner of war book written by one.

    2. Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick

Tells about life in North Korea following the Korean War through the eyes of a handful of defectors. It touches on the fall out from the Korean War, the power of propaganda, and the impact of foreign relations. Not exactly military history but close enough that he should find it interesting and learn about the human toll that foreign conflicts have.
