Im trying to branch out and read anything other than a dense fantasy series.

Ideally 200-300 page modern classics, mystery, horror, romance

I would like to expand my vocabulary and have a little bit of a challenge but nothing pretentious, but somehow still easy to read

    Thanks!

We all need palate cleansers. Here are some great, shorter (200 pages) reads:

Open Throat: Interesting novella about humanity through the eyes of a mountain lion. It has a little bit of a fantasy flair and is surprisingly lgbtq friendly, for a mountain lion story

A Short Stay in Hell: Existential Horror at its finest. The ideas therein will stay with you.

The Old Man and the Sea: Surprisingly good and of course its a classic, I read it in one sitting when I found it on a nightstand

All Systems Red and the rest of the Murderbot Diaries: If you like fantasy, give these short sci-fi novellas a try. Fun, smart characters, action, well-loved series in an easy-to-digest novella format.

Piranesi: Probably the closest to a modern classic from the last decade. Very unique. Mystery.

The Hike by Magory: Quick, easy modern horror. A regular guy goes for a hike, ends up experiencing existential horror. Neat ending.

I loved The Rosie Project by Graeme Simision. It’s a romance through the hilarious yet compassionate lens of neurodiversity. Around 300 pages, and there was something on every one of them that made me a little happier or a little wiser.
