My boys are 10 and 13.
They are both heavily into computers and gaming and doom scrolling…
My 13yo enjoys reading and likes physical books but his dad, whom he lives with majority of the time, doesn't encourage reading and doesn't buy them books. He barely give them basic home training skills.
Anyways
I need suggestions
He has read a lot of books in school but the ones I recall he liked the most so far are:
The Wild Robot Series,
The Percy Jackson series (his sister read it to him then he said he read them all again on his own because he enjoyed them so much),
Out of My Mind – Sharon M. Draper.
And right now he is reading the Hatchet series.
I like to find old classics form when I was younger but can't remember them all.
The Giver,
Lord of the Flies,
Gulliver's travels…
And well I can't recall much else…drawing a blank…
I also want to find books that are for boys and young men that teach them good morals a life lessons and such.
Any suggestions would be great.
I am trying to encourage them to read one book a month and would love to build up their book collection
They are so engrossed in gaming some days and I don't have much to talk to them about. I also want to read some of these books as well.
My 10yo son doesn't seem interested in reading but has enjoyed most of the same book from what I recall.
I also need books that are affordable too.
Most new books and series are so pricy. 😞
And since they mainly live with their dad going to the library doesn't suit us because they can't take the books home and I can't renew them enough times before the books need returned.
I also don't want them to accidentally lose them at their dads or damage them.
My eldest son doesn't like ebooks so I can't really go that route with digital library books or anything.

Do you have a goodwill or thrift store near you? I found tons of books for my kids there and they were $2 each…there’s classics mixed in with newer books they might be interested in
“My side of the mountain” about a boy who trys to live by himself in the mountains because he is overwhelmed with his large family.
“Rangers Apprentice: Theruins of Gorlan” is about a boy who has been chosen as a rangers Apprentice and all the work he has to put into being the best he can be!
“The city of Ember” is a book about kids who are tasked with keeping the light on for a city that does not have another option for survival.
“Hatchet” is a story about a boy who is in a plane crash and only has the clothing on his back and a hatchet his mom gave him. He has to survive for the rescue team to find him.
When I tought middle school Jason Reynolds’ books were *always* a winner with young boys!! Not a classic yet, but absolutely worth looking into if they can be found at a good price. Also, even if you don’t borrow books from the library it’s worth checking book sales there!
