Hey all! Could you suggest me some books or authors that are modern-day equivalent of Isaac Asimov/his works: someone who has developed certain ideas (on technology and society) that might sound outlandish to some tofay but could be perceived as quite normal in 50+ years. Said ideas should be more of a background for the story, not a central piece – same as with Asimov's novels.
E.g., Asimov deals with some basic ideas like internet communications and interplanetary travel fairly early. He talks about DNA modifications, hereditary traits, etc. – which was probably fairly easy for him given his education and scientific interest. Nowadays, some of the stuff he wrote about is pretty normal. I'd love to feel the way his readers did in 1950s – with some modern authors taking a stab at what the near future might bring.

I feel uncertain about telling you to read Greg Egan because while he is quite like Asimov, his books you’ll most want to read were written in the 90s.
Greg Bear. Greg Egan.
For nonfiction, Homo Deus could work.
