Tried to read this book a few months ago, and decided to give it another try. The writing is so clunky and disjointed it’s almost painful to read. The narrator “thinks/feels” one way and then says something completely different. It’s so in your face at times that it feels like it’s been written by AI. Half the time I’m wondering what anything means. It’s an interesting concept, but no depth at all so far. I’m writing this to share my thoughts, which I’m sure aren’t novel, but also for someone to help me and point out why I dislike the writing so much in a more eloquent way.

I got half way through it and legit tossed it in the trash.
There’s nothing really to point out other than the fact that it’s a very amateurish novel in every aspect.
i didn’t really like the first book that much either. The second book is a massive improvement
DNF’ed this one at 50%. The only reason I made it that far was because of the absurdly high number of people who recommended it to me — one woman (whom I respect very much) even named her son Darrow.
I was bored to tears the entire time. The world building is needlessly complicated, and the characters are flat. It’s Hunger Games in space, but more boring.
I haven’t read Red Rising, but in general when a character “thinks/feels” one way and then says something completely different the writer is telling you that character is being untruthful or maybe he/she can’t say what they really mean, or a playing coy, etc.
