Most of my favorite books are really sad and/or depressing — Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go, Ian McEwan's Atonement, Jane Smiley's A Thousand Acres, to name a few – I just need a break from horrifying situations and/or miserable characters. Anything that's both kinda cheerful AND well-written??? Quite the challenge, methinks.

Goethes Faust. Kind of funny.
The Safekeep – van Der Wouden – read this recently and really liked it. Booker nominee last year.
