Family's planning to go to Barnes and Nobles soon, and after reading Warriors and rereading The Hunger Games, I'm kinda struggling to branch out into other series because I don't wanna commit to buying a book that I end up not liking. Mainly looking for fantasy books, but I'm also open to romance, dystopian, and realistic fiction.

Other books I've read and enjoyed for reference:
*The Sunbearer Trials and Celestial Monsters by Aiden Thomas
*The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
    *Hollow Fires by Samira Ahmed

ETA: Black MCs in particular would be great, but any POC lead is good with me

Iron widow and Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao might be something you look at. I personally really loved them! When I’m looking to purchase a new book, I like to read the first chapter or so of the book when I’m there to see if it will pull me into the story. If it’s not interesting enough for me to want to keep reading, I put it back. That way I know I’m getting something that I will enjoy.

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler (Black American MC & author, dystopian)

You Exist Too Much by Zaina Arafat (queer Palestinian American MC & author, bildungsroman)

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Black Nigerian MC & author, literary fiction)

When the Tides Held the Moon by Venessa Vida Kelley. Author also sprinkles in beautiful illustrations that add magic to the tale. Main character is a Puerto Rican immigrant who’s hired to build a giant iron cage for an oddities troupe at Coney Island. Magically sweet story of finding love in the oddest of situations. My favorite book of the year, so far, and I read constantly. This book meets both of your requests. I hope you give it a try!

If youre open to stuff that’s not YA: The Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin starting with The Fifth Season – its fantasy with a dystopian vibe (and a smidge of romance but its not the focus). Most characters in that world are black or dark skinned.

If you liked the other Aiden Thomas books, you might like Cemetery Boys, too
