A friend of mine finished his PhD and wants to catch up on new authors/series. He's gotten some great suggestions for other genres but he's in the mood for some epic space opera.
He loved the Thrawn trilogy from Star Wars and The Expanse series, but was lukewarm on the Honor Harrington series. He loved the battle scenes but thought he was too long-winded in other scenes. He's looking for epic scenes like the Rohirrim appearing on the Fields of the Pelennor in the Lord of the Rings.
He's hoping for new authors from the last 3-4 years.
