for nonfiction, either slouching towards bethlehem or the white album would be great places to start. the year of magical thinking is also often recommended, though it deals with pretty weighty subjects (death and grief) which you may not want to wade into right now (or, alternatively, may be perfect for you).
for fiction, play it as it lays is pretty good. i’ve also read democracy but didn’t love it. i think she’s a much stronger nonfiction writer, and i don’t think she’d have the reputation she has if she only wrote fiction.
