I wouldn’t say unbelievable, but a shocking, yet informative true crime book is Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. Really gives you a lot of historical and socio-economic background on Mormons and Mormon culture, while also telling you a horrific story of violence.

I am no longer surprised by people’s cruelty or behavior, but I do enjoy the genre. I think the OG is still *In Cold Blood*. I also enjoyed *Killing Pablo*. And *Under the Banner of Heaven* is as close as I’ve probably seen to unbelievable.

I’ll go with the classic: In Cold Blood by Truman Capote.

Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties by Tom O’Neill is super deeply researched and takes on the “official” narrative of the Manson family murders but goes beyond that.

“Educated” by Tara Westover. The unbelievable part is less from what was done to her and more from how she survuved and overcame it.

Not sure if it really fits because there is a strong conspiracy basis to it, but
Chaos by Tom O’Neil
Theory tying the Manson Murders to the CIA.
Real verified True Crime is Killers of the Flower Moon. Accurate and depressing
