Hi! As the title notes, I'm going through a hard time right now and I'd love something to quiet my brain.
Suggest me some books, please! Any genre, maybe prioritizing fiction, but nonfiction is still fine. I'm looking for something interesting, gripping, very limited in the romance department.
I love a good thriller, mystery, and horror, but I'm game for anything – including fantasy/sci-fi, dystopian, and historical fiction. Plot twists and surprises welcome.
I've also been into audiobooks lately, so if you know of anything that particularly shines in that medium, please let me know.
Thank you, I'll appreciate any responses.

Dungeon Crawler Carl. Carl has just gone through a breakup when the aliens arrive and the world ends. All he has left is his ex-girlfriends cat Princess Donut. The audiobook is excellent
For something that’s a mindless page turner, The Davinci Code is a good bet. It’s terrible writing but it’s like the eating candy equivalent of reading, lol.
Little Fires Everywhere was also really good and a page turner with equal-ish parts character and plot. There’s a little romance, but it’s like teen crush type stuff. It was also a pretty decent series on Hulu.
Under the Banner of Heaven is an amazing audiobook. It’s a really in depth history of the LDS church. Nothing romantic at all, lol. It’s one of my top 5 non fiction reads ever. Jon Krakauer is an all around good bet for engrossing non fiction.
Another audiobook I really liked is Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress. Not focused on marriage at all as the title might imply. You can also skip around if you want, it’s a memoir and the chapters can stand alone.
Sending you good vibes and hoping you have good support to get through this!
I know you said no romance, and this one has some, but it’s definitely not the main focus: “Wedding People” by Alison Espach. The romance is like a side character among many side characters of equal importance in the protagonist’s life, who is a woman trying to rebuild her sense of self (and life) after her marriage ends. It sounds really serious and kinda dark plot it’s actually hilarious (I still laugh thinking about a few scenes) and touching (Did I cry? Yeah, but the good kind, the releasing kind) and really insightful all at once. I read it after my own difficult breakup a few months ago with no expectations except for a friend’s recommendation and desperately needing a distraction much like yourself. It ended up being one of the best books I’ve read this year, and is definitely in my all time faves list.
Sending you love and strength. You got this.
