I’m looking for books with a very specific feeling. I’m not sure how to put it into words, so I’ll try to be as descriptive/synesthetic as possible.
I’m a huge fan of Patrick Rothfuss’s narrative style in The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man’s Fear. I love the way he describes settings, situations, and characters, with a mix of poetic and straightforward writing that’s neither overly flowery nor too minimalistic.
But I don’t want to read just medieval fantasy anymore. I’ve already gone through Mistborn (first era), The Lord of the Rings, and so on.
I want something that captures the same vibe as Shinsekai Yori by Yusuke Kishi, or something like Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, or even with the ubi sunt / mystery of Made in Abyss, Shadow of the Colossus, and ICO.
Something that evokes the feeling of these tracks:
"Protect and Provide" from Nuketan
"Message" from Nuketan
"まほろば「さざらし」" fom Mahoroba
I’m not necessarily looking for something Japanese, just something with an exploration-driven tone that gives me the sense of discovery these works did. But not in a dark massacrated way like in Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Blood Meridian, Roadside Picnic, but more like a "oh, that's dark", let's keep going…
I’m open to any kind of work: novels, literary fiction, or even something like “I’m writing a story like this, check out my book and support my Kickstarter!”

Hmmm I’m not sure how accurate my recommendation will be as Rothfuss is the only reference which I’ve read. I’ve got two, very different suggestions but I think they may both fit.
The Great Passage by Shion Miura. Japanese literature about a man dedicated to the creation of the “perfect” dictionary.
Xenogenesis trilogy (Lilith’s Brood) by Octavia Butler. Lush scifi about humans rescued/ stolen by an alien race just before an extinction level nuclear war destroys human kind. Are the aliens benevolent? parasitic?…..
Both of these have clear descriptive writing that evokes a sense of place and gives the MC a strong feeling of being.
I hope you find something great reads
