Setting aside his aging-poorly-with-each-passing-year skepticism (not disbelief) of climate change, Crichton was a very skilled writer who mixed dense research with artful thriller frameworks. (At some point, he hired at least one researcher to help streamline this process.)
I don't think artists can be "replaced," to be clear. I know there is no exact equivalent for Michael Crichton. And there is no other novel quite like Sphere. But perhaps there is a novel that deals with similar themes and atmosphere, and has the same propulsive/engrossing vibe, all while maintaining that Crichton-esque trademark of ample research.
What do you think? Is there someone writing today who matches Crichton's high standard?
I've seen some folks mention Ray Nayler's 2022 novel "The Mountain in the Sea" as being analogous to Crichton in some ways, but I haven't been able to confirm this myself.

I’m also curious about this. I just finished Jurassic Park and The Lost World last week and they were fantastic. They were my first Crichton books. I’m excited to check out his other ones.
